As a midwestern farm kid, I got my first taste of travel when my parents loaded me and my brother into the car each summer to take off for a new destination. They would pass us the road atlas and a stack of hotel books and put us to work navigating. I was hooked!
Throughout my life, I’ve continued to rack up the miles on land and in the air taking trips whenever and wherever I can. Those early road trips took me all over the Midwest and West, and on my first visit to the coast where I fell in love with the ocean. By high school, I’d joined a program that took me on summer trips to different locations, and in college, I started hopping planes to go on solo trips to New York City, Boston, or Los Angeles to meet friends and explore.
When I met my husband, we schemed about the trips we would take and planned a destination wedding and honeymoon in Jamaica. Later my travel planning skills came in handy as we spent a year traveling in our RV. Eventually, the ocean and vacation-year-round lifestyle called on us to make Florida our home base for our other travel adventures.
My favorite destinations are those so filled with a sense of place that even if you close your eyes you know you’re somewhere unique.
